Gallon Cold Brew Coffee
Cold brew is made for big batches, and a gallon bag lets you steep a whole gallon at once instead of brewing pitcher after pitcher. You use about 1 cup of coarse grounds per 4 cups of cold water, let it steep, and strain. The XXL Clear bag is ideal here because you can see the color deepen and judge the strength as it brews. The large size means a week of cold brew from one steep, and the see-through silicone is part of how you tell it is ready.
What you need
- 4 cups coarse-ground coffee
- 1 gallon cold filtered water
- A fine strainer, nut-milk bag, or coffee filter
- A pitcher or jars for the finished brew
- 1 XXL Silicone Food Storage Bag (Clear)
Directions
- Add the coarse grounds to the Clear bag, then pour in the cold water. Keep the ratio around 1 cup grounds to 4 cups water.
- Gently squish the bag so all the grounds are wet, then press out the air and seal.
- Let it steep at room temperature or in the fridge for 12 to 18 hours. Through the Clear bag you can watch the brew darken.
- Set a strainer or nut-milk bag over a pitcher and pour the cold brew through to catch the grounds.
- For an even cleaner cup, run it through a coffee filter a second time.
- Store the strained concentrate in the fridge and serve over ice, diluted with water or milk to taste. Rinse and reuse the bag.
Tips and notes
- Use a coarse grind; fine grounds slip through the strainer and make the brew muddy.
- A longer steep makes stronger, less acidic coffee; start tasting around 12 hours.
- This makes a strong batch you can dilute. Cut it with water or milk over ice.
- The Clear bag lets you judge color and strength without opening it.

Common questions
- What is the ratio for cold brew
- About 1 cup of coarse grounds per 4 cups of cold water, so a full gallon uses roughly 4 cups of grounds. Steep 12 to 18 hours and strain.
- How long should cold brew steep
- Twelve to eighteen hours. Shorter is milder, longer is stronger and smoother. Taste toward the end and strain when you like it.
- How do I strain it
- Pour through a fine strainer or nut-milk bag, then optionally a coffee filter for a cleaner cup. The Clear bag makes it easy to see when all the liquid is out.
- Is a gallon bag too big for coffee
- For batch cold brew the size is the whole point, giving you a week of coffee from one steep. The same bag also handles big-batch lemonade, sangria, or brining.
