An empty box is a nice object. A box with six recipes already in it, written by hand by people who love the couple, is something they will still own when their children are grown. It costs nothing and it takes an afternoon.
- Ask both families for two recipes each. Not their fanciest. The one they actually make. His mother's roast potatoes, her grandfather's pancakes.
- Have them write the cards themselves, in their own hand. Do not type them. The handwriting is the gift. If someone lives far away, post them a blank card and a stamped envelope.
- Keep the imprecision. If the card says a knob of butter and until it looks right, leave it. Translating it into grams removes the person from the recipe.
