Housewarming Gifts for the Kitchen (That Are Not Another Candle)

Written by the team at Albino-monkey.com. Updated 25 August 2026. We make several of the items below and we mark those clearly.

Short answer: the safest housewarming gift is one for the table rather than for the person. You rarely know someone's decorating taste, but everyone needs things to feed guests with. A matching set of chopsticks, a recipe box, or something consumable will all land. Candles, framed prints and anything with a slogan will not.

The rule: buy for the table, not for the person

A housewarming gift has an awkward job. You are giving an object to someone whose home you have usually just seen for the first time, whose taste you do not know, and who has spent three weeks deciding exactly where everything goes. Decorative gifts put them in the position of having to display something they did not choose.

Gifts for the table dodge all of that. Serving items, glassware, utensils and food are used and then put away. They also solve a real problem, because the moment somebody moves into a new home, people start visiting, and almost nobody has enough of anything to serve six people.

Category Risk Why
Table and serving items Low Used then stored, no taste required
Consumables Low Disappears, so it cannot clutter
Kitchen organisation Low Solves a real problem in a new kitchen
Cookware Medium They probably have it, and preferences are strong
Decor, candles, prints High Assumes taste you do not know

5, 6 and 7. Three we do not sell

  • Something consumable and good. Olive oil, a bottle of wine, proper coffee. It gets used, it cannot clutter, and it needs no taste judgement from you.
  • A plant that is hard to kill. Snake plant, pothos, ZZ. Green, forgiving, and it makes a bare room feel finished.
  • A tin of something for the guest drawer. Good tea or biscuits. Small, and it acknowledges that they are about to have a lot of visitors.

What not to bring

  • Candles. Everyone brings candles. They will have eleven.
  • Wall art and framed prints. You are asking them to hang your taste in their new home.
  • Anything with a slogan on it. Live Laugh Love and its relatives.
  • Large furniture or appliances. Unless asked, this creates an obligation rather than a gift.
  • Pets. Never a surprise. Not once.

Common questions

What is a good housewarming gift for the kitchen?

Something for the table rather than for the person. A matching set of serving utensils or chopsticks, a recipe box, or something consumable. New households almost always lack enough matching items to serve guests, and table gifts require no knowledge of the recipient's taste.

How much should I spend on a housewarming gift?

Between $20 and $30 for a friend, $30 to $50 for close family. Above that the recipient can feel obliged, which is the opposite of what a housewarming gift is for.

Is it rude to bring a housewarming gift that is not decorative?

The opposite. Practical gifts are generally better received, because they do not require the host to find a place to display something they did not choose.

What should I bring if I do not know their taste at all?

Consumables or table items. Good olive oil, a bottle of wine, or a set of matching utensils. All three are used and then gone or put away, so nothing hinges on taste.
