Freeman: The Story of One Monkey

and of the millions that are not rescued

Freeman spent ten years alone in a dog crate before he was rescued. This book follows his story into the wider one: how the long-tailed macaque became the most traded primate in the world, what a decade of isolation does to a social animal, and what a sanctuary can and cannot undo. Sixty-five pages, sixty-five minutes of audio, free.

    What the book is about

This is not a sad story told for its own sake. It starts with one question we could not put down: how does a monkey end up spending ten years in a crate, and why does that happen so often that it barely counts as news? Answering it took us from a rescue center to the breeding farms of Southeast Asia, the export paperwork of the Cambodia case, the laboratories that buy macaques by the thousand, and the phone screens where cute videos are quietly funding the trade.

Along the way it explains what a macaque actually is, why isolation damages them the way it damages us, what recovery can realistically look like, and what animal welfare means once you strip the marketing off it. It ends with the part that matters most: what you can do, and what a sanctuary can do with your help.
