How to Freeze Soup Flat
A gallon of soup is a lot, and that is the point: cook once, freeze a big batch, and stack the bags like books in your freezer. The XXL Blue bag holds up to a gallon, and freezing it flat turns that volume into a thin slab that thaws fast and stacks vertically to save space. The tinted Blue silicone hides the frosted, freezer-burned look that clear bags show, so your soup looks better going in and coming out.
What you need
- Up to 1 gallon cooled soup, stock, chili, or sauce
- A flat tray or sheet pan (for the freezing step)
- A marker or label
- 1 XXL Silicone Food Storage Bag (Blue)
Directions
- Let the soup cool fully. Hot liquid stresses the seal and warms your freezer.
- Stand the Blue bag up and ladle in the soup, leaving a couple of inches at the top so it can expand as it freezes.
- Press out the air, seal the leakproof zipper, then lay the bag flat and gently spread the soup into an even layer.
- Label it with the contents and date. Lay the flat bag on a sheet pan and freeze until solid.
- Once frozen flat, pull the tray out and stand the slabs up like books or stack them to save space.
- To thaw, set the bag in the fridge overnight or run it under cool water, then reheat. The thin slab thaws much faster than a deep tub.
Tips and notes
- Leave headspace; liquids expand as they freeze and an overfilled bag can stress the seal.
- Freeze flat on a tray first so the slab is even, then stack or file the frozen bags vertically.
- Label every bag; a freezer full of frozen soup all looks the same.
- The Blue tint hides the frosted freezer-burn look, so the bag stays presentable.

Common questions
- Why freeze soup flat instead of upright
- A flat slab thaws far faster than a deep block and stacks like books, so you fit more in the freezer. The XXL bag is what gives you a full gallon in one flat layer.
- How much headspace should I leave
- A couple of inches at the top. Soup expands as it freezes, and the gap protects the airtight seal.
- How long does frozen soup keep
- About three months for best quality in an airtight bag. Label the date so you can rotate older bags first.
- Is a gallon bag too big for soup
- For batch cooking the capacity is the benefit, since you freeze a whole pot in one bag. For smaller amounts the bag still freezes flat and stacks, so the size is never wasted.
