Classic Margarita
This classic margarita keeps to the balanced three-part formula: tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice. Fresh lime is what separates a great margarita from a sour-mix version, so squeeze it to order. Shaken with ice and poured over a salted rim, it comes together in about 5 minutes. This recipe makes one cocktail and scales up easily for a pitcher.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces blanco tequila
- 1 ounce orange liqueur, such as triple sec or Cointreau
- 1 ounce fresh lime juice
- 1/2 ounce simple syrup, optional, to taste
- Coarse salt, for the rim
- Lime wheel, for garnish
- Ice
Directions
- Run a lime wedge around the rim of a glass, then dip the rim in coarse salt. Fill the glass with ice.
- Add the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and simple syrup if using to a shaker filled with ice.
- Shake hard for about 15 seconds until cold.
- Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
- Garnish with a lime wheel and serve.
Tips and variations
- Always use fresh lime juice. Bottled juice and sour mix taste flat and overly sweet by comparison.
- Use 100 percent agave blanco tequila for the cleanest flavor.
- Salt only half the rim so guests can choose. For a twist, mix the salt with a little chili powder.
