Classic margarita cocktail with lime and salt rim
Drinks

Classic Margarita

This classic margarita keeps to the balanced three-part formula: tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice. Fresh lime is what separates a great margarita from a sour-mix version, so squeeze it to order. Shaken with ice and poured over a salted rim, it comes together in about 5 minutes. This recipe makes one cocktail and scales up easily for a pitcher.

Ingredients

  • 2 ounces blanco tequila
  • 1 ounce orange liqueur, such as triple sec or Cointreau
  • 1 ounce fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup, optional, to taste
  • Coarse salt, for the rim
  • Lime wheel, for garnish
  • Ice

Directions

  1. Run a lime wedge around the rim of a glass, then dip the rim in coarse salt. Fill the glass with ice.
  2. Add the tequila, orange liqueur, lime juice, and simple syrup if using to a shaker filled with ice.
  3. Shake hard for about 15 seconds until cold.
  4. Strain into the prepared glass over fresh ice.
  5. Garnish with a lime wheel and serve.

Tips and variations

  • Always use fresh lime juice. Bottled juice and sour mix taste flat and overly sweet by comparison.
  • Use 100 percent agave blanco tequila for the cleanest flavor.
  • Salt only half the rim so guests can choose. For a twist, mix the salt with a little chili powder.
  • Please drink responsibly and only if you are 21 or older. Serve water alongside and never serve to anyone underage.

Common questions

What is the best tequila for margaritas
A 100 percent agave blanco tequila is the standard. It is crisp and lets the lime and orange liqueur shine.
How do I make a pitcher of margaritas
Multiply each ingredient by the number of servings and stir together in a pitcher with ice. Add the ice just before serving so it does not dilute.
Can I make it without orange liqueur
Orange liqueur is part of the classic balance. In a pinch, add a splash of orange juice and a touch more simple syrup, though the flavor will be softer.
How do I make a frozen margarita
Blend the same ingredients with about a cup of ice until slushy. You may want a little extra simple syrup since freezing mutes sweetness.
